The movement started in 2020, with less than thirty like-minded men and women living in Yemen and abroad who put their heads together in order to come up with a new political framework representing the Yemeni people, and not siding by any entity per se. In the course of four years, NRM grew in size to include over 357 distinguished professional Yemeni men and women from all walks of life. It has created its General Assembly and held two congregations, one in January and the other in April 2021. It has created its infra structure with its working tracks containing over 132 members. In June 2024, the movement launched its transitional Phase for six months in order to prepare for the its Permanent Phase.
On February 20, 2025, the National Peace Movement (NPM) was officially launched, marking a major milestone after four years of work under its former name, the National Reconciliation Movement (NRM). Timed with the World Day of Social Justice, the launch was led by the overwhelming majority of the former NRM’s founders, leaders, and members.
This transformation reflects the need for a more modern, strategic approach to peace efforts in Yemen, in line with national and global developments. It also aligns with the transitional phase announced on June 2, 2024, moving the movement from its foundational stage to a permanent structure with a new identity and direction. The change responds to members’ calls for reform in the organization’s structure and principles to strengthen its impact on peacebuilding.
